We've been so busy with programs and events, we haven't had time to update our blog for two months. That, however, has changed! Check out our newest blog post here. New visitors have arrived at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center! Mud Swallows, of the Mission at San Juan Capistrano fame, have set up our newest exhibition. Over 200 nests have cropped up over the patio at the South end of the Great Hall.
Mud swallows, or American Cliff Swallows, build conical mud nests and lay 3-6 eggs per nest. In nature, they build their nests on cliffs, preferably beneath overhangs. However, man-made structures are now the location of choice (bridges, patio overhangs, tall buildings), as long as there is mud close by. Our balcony overhang, and proximity to the Jordan River and a canal that runs through the property, make us the prime location for these visitors. We can see why, because they have the best view in the valley.
According to a spokesman from the Tracy Aviary Science Conservation Department, these swallows must have been evicted from their previous breeding ground as they usually build their nests in April and eggs are produced in May. The Swallows will leave in the fall, so come down this summer to one of our events and check them out.
As of 6/12, nest construction progress has doubled from the posting of the news story.
Help us celebrate our first 10 years with a multi-cultural celebration called the Mix!
The event is scheduled on Saturday, June 7 at 6:00 p.m. The Mix is designed as a showcase of the mission of the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, where we will present quality local performers, art exhibitions, local food vendors, and ethnic traditions FREE to you and your family to enjoy.
At this inaugural event, we will have traditional artist demonstrations, musical performances, dance performances, gallery exhibitions, children's activities (including face painting, pinata breaking balloon animals, bouncy houses and more), and a closing ceremony complete with fireworks. This event is sure to be a hit for the entire family. Click here for more details.
